Cetacean Sanctuary Research

The Cetacean Sanctuary Research project focuses on the monitoring and on all ecological aspects of cetacean species inhabiting the Pelagos Sanctuary.

Research is conducted within the waters of the Pelagos Sanctuary for Marine Mammals, primarily in the Ligurian Sea (Northwestern Mediterranean).

Since 1990, ship-based visual and acoustic surveys have been carried out continuously, operating daily from May to October.

Studies conducted during the 1990s showed that this part of the Mediterranean ranks among the most significant for cetacean presence, due to its remarkable species diversity and abundance, as well as its high biological productivity. These findings prompted the Tethys Research Institute to play a leading role in the creation of the Pelagos Sanctuary for Mediterranean Marine Mammals.

To provide a solid scientific foundation for conservation and management decisions, the research also investigates the potential impact of human activities on cetacean populations within the Sanctuary.

Over the years, Tethys has made a significant contribution to advancing knowledge on the abundance, distribution, behavior, health, and conservation status of Mediterranean cetaceans.
