Kids and whales, together for the environment

Whales and dolphins represent some of the most valuable elements of biodiversity in the Mediterranean, where eight different species are regularly found. One of the key areas for their conservation is the Pelagos Sanctuary—an iconic, large-scale transnational marine protected area, the first of its kind. Although it includes the Ligurian Sea, the Sanctuary remains relatively unknown in the region.

The project involves two Italian regions: Liguria, which directly borders the Sanctuary’s waters, and neighboring Piedmont, from which many seasonal visitors travel to the coast.

The initiative aims to develop a digital, multimedia, and interactive tool—Missione Pelagos—initially in its prototype phase. The tool, in italian, is designed to inform and engage elementary and middle school students in Liguria and Piedmont, raising awareness about the value of this unique marine heritage. The project also includes activities that encourage children living in the area to share positive conservation messages with adults visiting Liguria.

The project includes the following components:

• Development and refinement of scientific content of the website “Missione Pelagos”, tailored graphic design, and further expansion and improvement of the existing prototype.
• Involvement of 500 schools from the Ligurian and Piedmont regions in online activities, including teacher training sessions and classroom activities with students in Liguria (both in-person and online) and in Piedmont (online only) during the 2025–2026 school year.
• One of the project’s objectives is to encourage children to create drawings reflecting the importance of the Sanctuary. The three most meaningful drawings were printed on tote bags, accompanied by short awareness messages (“awareness pills”).
• Free distribution of the tote bags to visitors in Liguria—many of whom are from Piedmont, though not exclusively—through several local Pro Loco associations during summer 2026.
• Free access to the Missione Pelagos website for all elementary and middle schools in Liguria and Piedmont.

The project is coordinated by the Tethys Research Institute and is carried out in collaboration with the Verdeacqua cooperative for educational activities, with the municipalities that have signed the Pelagos Partnership Charter, and with local tourist information offices.

Balene e delfini sono esponenti della più preziosa biodiversità del Mediterraneo, dove sono presenti con otto diverse specie. In una delle zone chiave per la loro salvaguardia, è stato istituito il Santuario Pelagos, grande area marina protetta transnazionale che comprende anche il mar Ligure - prima nel suo genere, ma ancora non capillarmente conosciuta sul territorio.

Questo progetto intende porre a regime uno strumento digitale, multimediale e interattivo, inizialmente in fase di prototipo, per informare e sensibilizzare gli alunni delle scuole primarie e secondarie di primo grado di Liguria e Piemonte, sull’importanza di questo patrimonio. Tra gli obiettivi, anche la trasmissione di messaggi virtuosi da parte dei bambini residenti agli adulti in visita in Liguria.

Il progetto prevede:

• Creazione e aggiornamento dei contenuti scientifici del sito “Missione Pelagos”, sviluppo grafico mirato ed espansione e miglioramento del prototipo esistente.
• Coinvolgimento di scuole selezionate, con corsi di formazione per insegnanti e attività in aula con gli studenti in Liguria (in presenza e da remoto) e in Piemonte (da remoto), durante l’anno scolastico 2025–2026.
• Uno degli obiettivi è invitare i bambini a realizzare disegni che rappresentino l’importanza del Santuario. I tre disegni più significativi vengono stampati su borse in tessuto (tote bag), accompagnati da brevi messaggi di sensibilizzazione (“pillole di consapevolezza”).
• Distribuzione gratuita delle tote bag ai visitatori in Liguria – molti dei quali provenienti dal Piemonte, ma non solo – attraverso diverse associazioni locali Pro Loco nell’estate del 2026.
• Accesso gratuito al sito web di Missione Pelagos per tutte le scuole primarie e secondarie di primo grado della Liguria e del Piemonte.

Il progetto, coordinato dall’Istituto Tethys onlus, a suo tempo primo proponente del Santuario Pelagos, vede la collaborazione della cooperativa Verdeacqua per le attività didattiche nelle scuole, e il coinvolgimento dei Comuni firmatari la Carta di Partenariato dell’Accordo Pelagos, e infine delle Proloco liguri.
